Head of the Order Retires
24th November 2024
On 22nd October Rev. Master Haryo Young announced his retirement from his position as Head of the Order. He will be continuing his monastic training as a member of the Shasta Abbey community. We wish to acknowledge our gratitude to Rev. Master Haryo for 20 years of service to the Sangha.
This announcement has occurred within the context of an investigation into ethical concerns raised in relation to Rev. Master Haryo which has now been conducted according to the rules and procedures laid out in the OBC rules. During this period of investigation Rev. Master Haryo stepped back from his administrative duties, according to the requirements of the rules.
The outcome of the investigation was to propose several sanctions to ensure the spiritual well being and safety of all concerned. The sanctions are now being implemented by the Head of the Order Council. A series of recommendations was also put forward regarding the future of the Order. This work will begin in the new year.
The Order has been administered temporarily by a three-monk “Head of the Order Council” which is fulfilling the usual responsibilities of the Head of the Order. This has just been expanded to four monks. This Council will serve for the time being, or until the next rules Conclave when the senior monks review, revise and update the rules of the Order.
If you have any concerns regarding this announcement, please contact the Head of the Order Council using this page.
